Fibers and How they act at parties

So here is the news on the home front

The ghetto is back on the wall, old fucken man winter finally woke his ass up and decided he wanted to play a little. it got really cold in the last couple days, i didnt even get to ride the ghetto to ultimate pratice, but i did make it to ultimate pratice, and i walked my ass there, and played on the ice, and fell.... alot... but it was cold, must have been 0 or close too it!

any ways, there is no good or bad news about the ghetto as of yet, the tires are pumped and ready to go, i do have to do some re adjusting on the cleats on the shoes, cuz the inside of my feet rub on the crank arms, other than that she is good.

I am currently looking to a carbon fiber handle bar and seat post for her, only becuase i am tired of the suspension seat post and i think she would look even more intersting with carbon fiber on her.

but i still dont trust carbon fiber,

here is why,

time for my engineer mind to step in and bore you

different materials have different impact strengths.
and im pact strength refers to how the materal can take a strike from an object has hard or harder than its self and how it responds.

for example, steel has a large impact strength, it can take a hit, dent and be ok, it will we weakened but could still be safe to use.

aluminum has a smaller impact strength, if hit and dented it becomed very week, and aluminum is brittle, there for it will more than likely fail under load or stress.

carbon fiber has a low impact strength, it does not bend, there for if struck it will crack and fracture and break, making it unsafe to use.

Where this all works in to the game

say i got some handle bars mad of steel, and one makde of aluminum and another made of carbonfiber

the steel could take a hit from a tree, or a rock and keep on going
the aluminum could take a hit from a tree and rock, if bent i would not use it for fear of fracture and it breaking

carbn firber could not take a hit it would break!

now you ask... but i was told carbon fiber is super light and strong...
and i tell you yes.... it is both but stong only in the way it was inteded to be used. carbon fiber is molded to take stresses in usualy only one direction, there for in that direction it could be stonger than steel or aluminum,

here is how i can explain it more, take a piece of string, and pull it tight, it is stong in the direction you are pulling it in, this is the fiber in carbon fiber

now ask a friend to pull at the middle of the sting, now you see, that the fiber is only strong in the drievtion in it is being pulled, or pushed in. pulling in the center and out of the direction that its orginal pull makes it week.

there for it has low impact strength

get it..... no? ok go to maine maritime academy, take the strenghts of materials class and come back and we will talk

or e-mail me and i will send you a coppy of some of the text and you can read for your self!

ok im done where was it...................

ok her are the other reasons i dont trust carbon fiber, i have seen it break more often than steel and aluminum and there is no warning to it breaking!

ok im done now

have a good day
hope the weather warms up
later
