Ladys and gentalmen, i proudly introduce the GHETTO COG, built by squid.

so here she is, ready to ride... and yes i did ride her, and the frist time i did i crashed her, not a mechanical problem, an ice problem, yeah it was snowing, yes i tried bunny hopping it off a curb tryen to land rear wheel frist and wheely it and slid acrost the McDonalds parking lot on my side

so this is it, she is nice, rides nice too, full power, the set up as you can see is a little funny, the raod stem with the down hill risers make it interesting to ride, but it is all good. i mean im not going to go ride some major trails with it.... well no i am, but im not going to go park riding with it.... nope i tried that too. well ok, so im going to beat the living shit out of it. but boy is it a fun bike, i mean it is super super light. to the point i can compare it with my raod bike.

she has some super agressive tires on it so it handles the snow kinda good, the only thing i dont like about it is the peddals, they are too narrow, so im going to get lighter ones that are bigger too. all in all she is ghetto but good, i like the ride, the response and the gearing.

that suspension seat post is killer too, sooo cushy, everyone who see's her likes her,

a missfit child but she is no bitch!

So here are the "new" used parts for the cog, the only thing really new here are thoes dot grips, which i might add are kinda nice, short... but nice, everything else is off a bike, and i got a front wheel too but thats not in the pic, i mean even the cable is used there! The seat post is a suspension seatpost which is cool and cushy, the 10 buck saddle is great, feels nice, i might get another one for the fisher, the break leavers are super nice, i mean fully adjustable pulls and everything. other than that that is it, the gheto cog is on its way

Worthy of new parts?

Good afternoon all

so here is my delima
well not really
so here it is

tomorrow im going to the littleton bikeshop to get a new front wheel, new grips and maybe new breaks for the ghetto
also a saddle and seatpost
so i guess it wont be soooooo ghetto after all, but still she is a missfit!
so anyways
i sid i was going to teach you how to make a old derailer into a chain stay
super ghetto???..... yes it is

so here ya go, ther are two springs in a derailer, what you have to do is take the derailer apart and let the sping tension off, when you do that and lit it go, when you put it backtogether and run the tension in the other direction you can now use it to tension the chain in the oppsit direction

use the adjust ment screws to make it leavel out and straighten out and then there ya go it canhold the chain tight.

does it work you aks/..... yes.... is it ghetto, super yes
is it worth it.... no
go spend the 12 bucks tog et a chain tensioner that is better
but if you are ina tight spot
there ya go

ok later people i will keep you up dated on the ghetto build after tomorrow!

Smack That Ass

Hi all

well as i promised i am going to tell you the long day.... days of trying to remount a rear wheel on the ghetto

for some background info, i took everything off the ghetto, derailer wheel and took the wheel apart.

when i had the ghetto apart for the frist time, thats when i got my road bike, or my newer older road bike, that bike has an 8mm screw down axle on the rear. and i wanted a quick release for it. so my bright idea was to change the axles on the hubs. long story short didnt work

even longer story short, lost some parts in the process
what happened, i was talking on the phone with a girl that i was trying to date
in the end i got lots parts and no dating!

so moven on, after taking off the wheel and all the components of the reat trinagle of the ghetto i decided it was finally time to put her back together

not really thinkinen things through i just poped stuff back on
my chain was not tight
only one side of the quick relase was holding
with a huge space on the other side of the axle
and the wheel would not center!

after strugling for about.... 2 hours
still on the phone, thistime with sarah
i decided to take a step back and look

thats what i did

this is what i came up with

the space was due to removing the derailer hanger
i needed to some how close a gap with another spacer
i needed to change out a spacer to get the axle to fit right
the frame needed to be sanded down to pull the axle more back to pull the chian tight
and finally
i needed to make sure the axle could be straight to center the wheel

this is what i did
took out file
filed down the inside of the rear left axle mount so the axle could slide more to the rear, put a differnt spacer on the inside of the axle and then put a spacer on the out side of the frame to hold the quick release then pulled the axle back tightened the chain and boom we are done

how ghetto did this come out you ask?

having a spacer on the out side of the bike frame..... ghetto
filing the frame down.... ghetto
pulling the axle to tighten the chain insted of a chain tenisenor... super ghetto
and finally.... to center the wheel moven the axle round and round till it was where i thought it was good...... time to ge the pads out ghetto!!!

so there you go
after that i adjusted the breaks to work on the rear
pumped the tire up to 45... 50 psi
put the fork on the stairs and tired to ballence on it
did a track stand kinda
and it worked

by this time it was 0100 am!

next i will tell you how to use an old derailer to use as a make shift chain tensioner

only and engieer could think of this!!!!!

squid out
and remember keep safe, play hard and ride you bike in the snow!

The Decision

Hi all

Ok so in making plans for the Ghetto, i did alot of it when i was working nights. Now doing that was not the greatest idea and decision making time for anything. When you work swing shift and you are on nights 7pm to 7am, 12 hours of work, you get excited about every little thing. I end up surfing the web alot, and then i see or read something exciting like Trials riding or park riding, and then decided i need new gear or something. Thats when the wallet comes out and i start spending money, or i start to plan things.

Sooooo here is what happened with the ghetto, i was looken at some bike websights and i saw lots of monocog shit, then i decided to finally make the ghetto in to a monocog (single speed)

Originaly the Ghetto was a 18 or 21 speed rigid mountain bike, so that ment i had to get a conversion kit for the rear to make it into one speed. I have never built a monocog so this was going to take some reasearch. After three hours of dogpileing anything i could think of for single speeds and monocogs, i finally found a conversion kit that i thought would work. I bought it over the net, and about a week later it was at the door. I ripped open the packege and went to go install it ont he rear wheel and come to find out, yeah i didnt have the correct tools! i didnt have the tools to take off the caset. soo what did i do, make one hahahahahaha yeah i love being a qualified machinest. If i dont have it, and i got the time and material i will make it!

so thats what i did,
then i ordered the correct parts and tools

when i went to install the single speed kit i found that the spacers where too big, so what do i do, bring them to work the next day and take some material off on the leith, but guess what, i took alittle too much off

so then what do i do, i "barrowed" a spacer (washer) from work that would cover the job, and i hid it behind the cog, so that noone would know....

SSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh dont tell any one

so there we go, i got it all mounted and ready to put the wheel back on the bike......... yeah..... um next post is going to be remounting the wheel

that was a nighmare

also when i do work on the cog, i am either onthe phone with a friend, family, or potential girl friend, or really earily waking up the roomate, or inthe middle of cooking.

i never pick the right time to work on the bike

thats why this is sooooo ghetto!!!!!

and i mean ghetto as in scatchy as in it could kill me, not the ghetto as in cheep a piece of shit bad way!!!!!

so there it is a pc bike
just ghetto

squid going back to work
later

Ordering parts

Good after noon all

So after i stripped the bike, i went out and bought two other bikes,
on the way home from work i stopped at this raod side flea market that had everything, and that day they had two road bikes on the lot. Eariler that month i sold my old road bike to a friend so she could do a triathalon, so i was in need of a raod bike

i stopped and found two, one that would fit and the other that i could use for parts, and i bought them for 20 bucks. then i went home and started repairs on them, i ordered a new saddle, new leavers for the breaks and new cables with some break pads as well.

when all was said and done i had a raod bike as fast as the wind, parts to repair it when ineeded and some parts that i could use for the ghetto cog. in the end i used a raod stem for the ghetto cog.

and i also used an extra set of pads for the breaks on the gheto cog as well!

so then i decided it was time to order some more parts
i got some grips and then i added my DH riser bars to the cog, and started to remount stuff, i used some old cable to line up the breaks and started to try and refit the wheel!

the gheto cog was on its start to becomming a bike again, and not just a frame on the stand.

next i will talk about remounting the rear wheel, making the mono cog, and getting the kit to turn a 8 speed into a single speed and why we need to remember to wear as much armor as we can when i first ride the ghetto!

later all and remember
ride safe
ride hard
push your self
but to the limits you know
keep clean and keep your friends close
